【essay の添削:接続詞と接続副詞 2】and / so / because / there

今回は、エッセイの添削で気になる接続詞や接続副詞の使い方を、順接の文を例に見ていきます。

1.”and”  coordinate conjunction
　特徴は、A and B とつなぐ場合、A と B は同じストラクチャーである必要があります。

The issue is too large and complicated to be solved in one meeting. 
 
ここでは、”and” が、”large” と “complicated” という adjective を繋いでいます。

次の文では、gerund (動名詞)を3つ 繋いでいます。

I like playing tennis, hiking, and taking my dog for walks. 

もちろん、次のようにセンテンスとセンテンスを繋ぐのは言うまでもありあませんね。

She didn’t speak to anyone and nobody spoke to her.

2. “so”  coordinate conjunction
　特徴は、2つの independent clause を繋ぐことです。

I was feeling hungry, so I made myself a sandwich.

3.”because”’  subordinate conjunction 

adverb clause (副詞節)を作り、main clause に繋げる役目をする接続詞です。

He will not meet her because she has insulted him. 
Because she has insulted him, he will not meet her. 

どちらでもOKです。

* so と because の区別

Oil and gasoline won’t last forever, so we’ll have to develop new fuel sources. 
Because oil and gasoline won’t last forever, we’ll have to develop new fuel sources. 

4 “therfore”  adverb(副詞)　よく、接続副詞と言われたりします(接続詞ではない)。

My mother looks much younger than her age. Therefore, people often mistake us for sisters.
My mother looks much younger than her age; therefore, people often mistake us for sisters.

どちらも正しい文です。大事なのは、接続詞ではないので、前のセンテンスは、ピリオドやセミコロンで切る必要があります。

*so, because, therefore の区別

She has insulted him, so he will not meet her.
Because she has insulted him, he will not meet her. 
She has insulted him; therefore, he will not meet her.  

*エッセイを書くときは、できるだけ、”therefore” や、”because” を使うように心がけましょう。Written English としての評価が上がります。使う場合は、上のように正しく使うようにしましょう。もちろん、’but’ を使ってはいけないという意味では、決してありません。
エッセイ問題は時間が限られていますので、時間が気になると、どうしても、”and” “so” が多くなってしまいますね。それに気を付けてもらいたいのです(評価が下がります)。
