【essay の添削:接続詞と接続副詞】but / although / however

エッセイの添削で気になる接続詞や接続副詞の使い方を、逆説の文を例に見ていきます。

1.”but”  coordinate conjunction
　特徴は、A but B とつなぐ場合、A と B は同じストラクチャーである必要があります。

I would like to visit but not live in New York. 
I would like to visit but not to live in New York.
 
どちらも正しい文です。上は、不定詞(infinitive)のto に続く動詞の原形を繋いでいます。下は、不定詞(infinitive)を繋いています。

次の文では、clause と clause を繋いでいます。
I know that he loves her but she doesn’t love him. 

‘that’ が作るnoun clause の中身を、A but B と繋いでいるわけです。

もちろん、次のようにセンテンスとセンテンスを繋ぐのは言うまでもありあませんね。
I went to the park, but I couldn’t find anyone.

2.’although’  subordinate conjunction 
adverb clause (副詞節)を作り、main clause に繋げる役目をする接続詞です。

Although cars cause many problems, it would be difficult to live without them. 
It would be difficult to live without them, although cars cause many problems. 

どちらでもOKです。

*but と although の区別
Cars cause many problems, but it would be difficult to live without them. 
Although cars cause many problems, it would be difficult to live without them.

3.’however’  adverb(副詞)　よく、接続副詞と言われたりします(接続詞ではない)

We thought the figures were correct. However, we have now discovered some errors.
We thought the figures were correct;however, we have now discovered some errors.

どちらも正しい文です。大事なのは、接続詞ではないので、前のセンテンスは、ピリオドやセミコロンで切る必要があります。

*but, although, however の区別
We thought the figures were correct, but we have now discovered some errors.
Although we thought the figures were correct, we have now discovered some errors.
We thought the figures were correct. However, we have now discovered some errors. 

*エッセイを書くときは、できるだけ、’however’ や、’although’ を使うように心がけましょう。Written English としての評価が上がります。使う場合は、上のように正しく使うようにしましょう。もちろん、’but’ を使ってはいけないという意味では、決してありません。
エッセイ問題は時間が限られていますので、時間が気になると、どうしても、’and’ ‘but’ ‘so’ が多くなってしまいますね。それに気を付けてもらいたいのです(評価が下がります)。
