【英語エッセイクラスで気になること】non-count noun に気を付けよう

エッセイ添削で気になることの一つは、non-count noun(不可算名詞)の使い間違いです。

その代表的な名詞が、 ‘information’ です。
〇 I need some information about hotels. 
× I need some informations about hotels. ‘s’ は絶対につきません。

When talking about one fact or detail, you say a piece of information or a bit of information:
He told me an interesting piece of information.

それ以外に、間違いやすい名詞が ‘furniture’ です。これも注意しましょう。
〇 The house has some beautiful old furniture.
× The house has some beautiful old furnitures.　これも ’s’ をつけてはいけません。

When talking about one chair or table, you say a piece of furniture or an item of furniture:
There was only one piece of furniture in the room.

‘advice’ も non-count noun です。
My father gave me some good advice.
My father gave me a piece of good advice.
このように使います。決して、’an advice’ とはしません。

★その他の主なnon-count nounを挙げておきます。
work(仕事), homework, research などです。注意しましょう。
