【英文読解・和訳クラスで気になるところ】”render”という語の使い方

LEOで使用するテキストで、しばしば登場する単語の一つが、”render”です。特に、下のような文中で使われている場合、なんとなくこんな感じかな、くらいの認識で読んでいる人が多いと感じます。

These pseudoideas ––– especially the pseudoidea of development ––– have the power to render a big part of the world ––– a big part of what is happening in the world ––– invisible.

ここでの”render”を、もっと分かりやすいセンテンスで説明しましょう。
The blow to his head was strong enough to render him unconscious.
「彼を意識不明にする」ということですね。
 
もう一つ passive の文の例を挙げておきます。
He was rendered almost speechless by the news.

この語のdefinitionは、”to cause someone or something to be in a particular condition” です。
