【英文添削をしていて気になること】”affect” と “effect” の使い方

Essay を添削していて、気になる点をご紹介します。その一つが、次のケースです。

“effect” を、”affect”と間違えて使用するケースを時おり目にします。
「～に影響を与える」は、”affect” を使いましょう。
Smoking affects your health.

ここの “affects” を “effects” に置き換えたりはできません。もし、”effect” を使用する場合は、次のように名詞で表現することができます。
Smoking has a bad effect on your health.

“effect”にも動詞形はあります。が、その時は、”cause and effect” (原因と結果)の「結果(effect)」から、「ある結果をもたらす」という意味で使われます。
These drugs can sometimes effect miraculous cures.　
The negotiators hoped to effect a smooth transition to an interim administration.

「～に影響を与える」と、動詞で使いたい場合は、”affect” を用いましょう。名詞で使用する場合は、”(have an) effect (on ～)” で表現しましょう。この2語を正しく使えるようにしてください。
